BYD recently unveiled the Sealion 7, a family-focused EV SUV competing against models like Tesla Model Y and Skoda Enyaq Coupe. However, its name does not imply it seats seven.
We put it through its paces on our typical test routes – some windy ones included.
Technology
The BYD Sealion 7 is equipped with BYD’s innovative Blade Battery, offering class-leading safety and efficiency. Additionally, this vehicle utilizes range-extending regenerative braking to extend range while sporting an electric motor capable of reaching 23,000rpm for added torque.
The Sealion 7 SUV features cutting-edge technologies, such as Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality for charging household appliances and electronics when not being driven – enabled through its in-vehicle charger that can provide up to 30kW.
The Sealion 7 is the latest addition to Ocean Series lineup, joining Seal U and Song L models on a common platform and expected to compete against similar offerings from other manufacturers such as Tesla Model Y.
Design
BYD’s Sealion 7 SUV brings Ocean-inspired aesthetics and cutting-edge EV technology to Europe. Living up to its name, this vehicle combines striking design and cutting-edge innovation.
Wolfgang Egger, former Alfa Romeo design head, gave the SEALION 7 a decidedly European aesthetic, with its low front end and soft yet full curves on either side of its sides.
The SEALION 7’s innovative e-Platform 3.0 architecture and Cell-to-Body construction provide outstanding driving dynamics, including quick acceleration and smooth top speed of 215 km/h when set in Sport mode.
Comfort spec and Design AWD models of the Nissan Juke use an 82.5 kWh Blade Battery that provides up to 482 km in single motor drive mode (WLTP range). This innovative lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cathodes provide class-leading safety and performance as well as low centre of gravity and superior torsional rigidity for single-motor mode driving.
Performance
The BYD SEALION 7 uses its advanced e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture, offering higher DC charging speeds up to 240kW for faster DC charging rates and providing an estimated range of 482 km with rear-wheel drive Comfort or up to 550km when equipped with dual motor Design AWD models.
As with the Chinese-market Seal, the SEALION 7 makes use of BYD’s innovative Cell-to-Body (CTB) battery installation technology. By including battery packs as structural elements in its design, CTB improves safety while offering exceptional torsional stiffness.
Internally, the SEALION 7 blends SUV styling with cutting-edge EV technology and offers a beautifully finished cabin. A 15.6-inch customisable rotating touchscreen makes navigation and entertainment simple while improved voice recognition keeps you connected and informed while on the road. 128-color ambient lighting creates the ideal ambience for every mood while 12 Dynaudio speakers deliver high-fidelity music for an enjoyable driving experience. You can even precondition the cabin before arriving so your ride is at its most comfortable.
Price
BYD’s Sealion 7 electric SUV marks its entry into the D-Segment electric SUV market, joining competitors such as Tesla Model Y and Skoda Enyaq Coupe. Although it may seem strange having an SUV named after its number (e.g. 7), such names don’t stand out more than having sports cars named Cayman or Puma.
The BYD Sealion 7 features an innovative cell-to-body design combining battery technology with an 800V electrical architecture, providing class-leading power and range, while simultaneously creating a highly rigid structure to improve driving dynamics and comfort.
There are two models to choose from – the Comfort trim offers an impressive 283 miles of range while its four-wheel drive Excellence variant adds an additional 61 miles thanks to a larger battery. Both come equipped with air conditioning, an electric power steering system, high resolution infotainment screen, autonomous driving capabilities and smartphone integration via the BYD app.
